Steering well takes you further

Because … the better you anticipate what’s coming at you, the better you realise your goals.

By steering, I mean that you know what you want to achieve and that you know whether you will succeed. If necessary, you adjust your priorities and adjust your ambitions. You are also aware of your role and the value you add.

How do you steer?

You can make adjustments using, for example, a dashboard, reports, discussions, signals and visits. Make sure you know what you are steering for and what goal you are striving for. Check regularly whether you are still on course. Do you recognise yourself in one of these examples?

“I am having a great time as a publisher in a company that produces school books. However, lately I have not been able to achieve my objectives. Together with my colleagues, I have been looking at whether our objectives are still correct and whether the work we are doing is contributing to them. It turns out that all kinds of work have gradually been added, such as publishing children’s novels, which in itself is fun and useful, but does not directly contribute to what distinguishes us as a publisher. By adjusting my priorities, I am able to achieve my goals perfectly again.”

“As a deliverer and installer of white goods for a large internet shop, I always have clear tasks to complete during the working day. I have about 5 trips a day in my region and I manage well. But the other day, I had a lot of traffic jams due to bad weather and I knew I wouldn’t make it to the last customer in time. I then consulted the planning department and someone else took over the last delivery. Fortunately, I saw it coming in advance and the planning department was able to ensure that the customer did not even notice that I had a setback.”

“Since I started university, I have a part-time job in an amusement park that aims to give all visitors ‘the day of their lives’. It is my job to make sure that there is no litter lying around in the park and that the bins are emptied on time. In practice, this means that I drive around almost the whole day with my trolley and see a huge number of visitors. By keeping an eye on what is happening and coming up with creative solutions, I can do my job very well based on the purpose of the amusement park. For example, I recently drove a young boy around with his mother and sister for the entire afternoon after he had sprained his ankle. With a little help, he was able to ride the roller coaster and our other attractions just fine and had an afternoon to remember.”
